When I asked her if she knew God’s heart concerning her current condition or any way out of it, she said, “Aunty, God has been silent on me, and I don’t even think He hears my prayers at all.”

Lady D. hadn’t been feeling well over the last couple of days, so I decided to visit her and called to let her know. When I arrived at her home, we exchanged pleasantries. After asking about her health, I started talking about following Jesus, and she was receptive.

I spoke from James 3, which speaks about heavenly wisdom, and why it is important to have wisdom from above and not depend on earthly wisdom. She agreed that many times, we plan our lives all on our own without seeking God’s opinion. Then, when things go wrong, we blame God for being unfaithful.

Lady D. has sickle cell disease, which is responsible for her frequent ill health. When I asked her if she knew God’s heart concerning her current condition or any way out of it, she said, “Aunty, God has been silent on me, and I don’t even think He hears my prayers at all.”

I comforted her and reminded her that being a sickle-cell carrier doesn’t mean God hates her. I encouraged her to seek God, to hang around righteous company, and shared practical tips on how to apply wisdom in navigating her daily mind battles, even physical challenges she faces at home.

I had earlier invited her to the monthly Prepare To Meet Your God tarry meeting. But she said her mother wouldn’t allow her, a 27-year-old master’s student, to go to any church apart from their family church. Her mother doesn’t believe she can make any useful decisions or be anything meaningful, yet also expects her to stop being a “childish adult” always in need of supervision. I told her that wisdom would help her in this area, and that she must be serious about turning to God and making visible repentance. This, in turn, might encourage her parents to allow her to visit God’s Lighthouse (GLH) after seeing real progress.

After praying for her, she broke down in tears. She opened up about how all the plans her family had for her never seemed to work. She said she feels like, and even appears to be, a failure, constantly sick, draining her family’s resources, and being blamed for their misfortunes. She told me that my visit brought her so much hope and light, assuring her that God still loves her enough to send her love through strangers. She also confessed that she had been fighting depression and suicidal thoughts, yet lacked the knowledge to seek help from God, even though she is a children’s teacher in church. I prayed for her again and encouraged her to soak in God’s Word, live it out obediently, and remain hopeful that God can do what man cannot.

She agreed to leave the crypto journey she had recently started and focus on knowing the Lord and His ways. She joined the GLH channel and even the YouTube channel so she could have access to our songs. She assured me she would strive to obey all the things the Lord taught her that day—including journaling and asking Him to speak to her parents on her behalf about matters she couldn’t boldly address herself.

After spending about two hours with her, she introduced me to her sister, who had just returned home. She also gave me a can of malt drink, which I didn’t say no to. I was glad I could bring encouragement and hope to a soul in need, and I trust God to perfect all that He has begun in her because God loves to speak to His children!
